Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes, commonly found in parts of Africa and South America. As a result, it can cause serious illness, including fever, jaundice, and, in severe cases, organ failure.
Although most travellers face a low risk of yellow fever, the disease can be severe. Therefore, we strongly recommend that anyone visiting endemic areas get vaccinated. In addition, some countries require proof of vaccination for entry.
However, infants under 6 months, people with severe egg allergies, or those with weakened immune systems may not be suitable for the vaccine. To ensure your safety, our healthcare team will carry out a full risk assessment during your consultation.
Symptoms
Yellow fever usually begins 3–6 days after a mosquito bite. Initially, early signs include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, and fatigue. Most mild cases resolve within a few days, but in some people, the infection can progress to a severe stage. Severe yellow fever can affect the liver and kidneys, causing jaundice, abdominal pain, bleeding, and organ failure. The fatality rate in serious cases is high, which makes prevention essential.
Because no specific treatment exists, vaccination offers the best protection. Combining vaccination with practical mosquito-avoidance measures, like using repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers, and sleeping under insecticide-treated nets, further reduces your risk.
Vaccination
The yellow fever vaccine protects you long-term against the disease. For most travellers, a single dose provides lifelong immunity. Serious side effects affect very few people. However, anyone with certain medical conditions or a weakened immune system should speak with a healthcare professional before receiving the vaccine.
Many countries require travellers to provide proof of vaccination. We document your vaccination in an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). As a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, North Manchester Travel Clinic administers the vaccine in line with international health regulations.
We also provide Yellow Fever Replacement Certificates for £10, as long as you show proof of your original vaccination.
